No Touch IconCleaning the Aircraft

Our aircraft have always been carefully cleaned in line with the highest standards in aviation health and safety practices. Still, the COVID-19 pandemic has called for us to step up measures to ensure maximum prevention of infection. We've included the following cleaning and disinfecting activities:

  • Our aircraft are deep-cleaned every evening using an aircraft-grade, antibacterial and antiviral cleaning solution.
  • The teams pay special attention to common touch areas like seatbelts, armrests, tray tables, handles, buttons, air vents, overhead bin closures, and the bathroom areas.
  • The aircraft cabin is sprayed down using an electrostatic disinfectant, which is highly effective in combatting viruses and bacteria and remain active on surfaces for an extended period.

Areosol IconDisinfection Between Flights

Between flights, commonly used areas such as lavatories, tray tables, armrests, seat belts, call buttons and overhead bin handles, are cleaned with a broad-spectrum disinfectant. Afterwards, cabins are treated using sanitising aerosol foggers.

Mask IconMasks

All staff and customers are required to wear masks for the duration of their journey with us.

  • We will provide all passengers with sanitised masks, sealed for your protection, before boarding. We ask that passengers discard of this packaging in the bins provided before boarding to avoid contamination.
  • The crew also wear masks fitted with disposable Airlaid spun lace filters to protect them and our customers.

No Touch IconNo Touch

There is no need for a customer to touch any surface on the aircraft up until you are required to stow your hand luggage or fasten your seatbelt. We've implemented a strict no-touch policy to avoid direct contact between our teams and our customers and to avoid contact on shared surfaces. Specifically:

  • We encourage customers to use our mobile or WhatsApp boarding passes. Boarding passes should be scanned by customers without touching the scanner surfaces.
  • ID documents should be presented to the team, but not handed to anyone.
  • There will be no magazines, but customers are encouraged to download digital copies onto their mobile devices before boarding.
  • No catering will be available onboard to prevent touching of shared surfaces.

  • Each passenger will be required to clean their hands with hand sanitiser, provided by our the crew, when boarding.
  • The crew also have additional sanitiser on board should customers need any.
  • Our lavatories are stocked with antibacterial and antiviral soap.

Temperature screening Icon Temperature Checks

  • All crew will have their temperature taken before duty, and any person who exhibits a temperature over 38°C will be sent home.
  • All customers will also have their temperatures taken before boarding, and any customer with a temperature over 38°C will be denied boarding.
  • The crew are also equipped with digital thermometers to monitor customer temperatures during flight.

IconCarefully Controlled Air Quality

  • FlySafair's aircraft are equipped with a sophisticated air recycling system that completely renews the cabin air every few minutes.
  • This system operates across blocks of seat rows, ensuring all parts of the aircraft receive the same quality of fresh air simultaneously.
  • This system employs High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters that are similar to those used in operating theatres.

IconSocial Distancing Seats

While physical distancing through the use of masks should be a sufficient measure, we've also made the opportunity available to customers to ensure that they can employ a degree of social distancing during their journey. As a policy, we will fill window and aisle seats before allocating passengers to the middle seat, but passengers booking on our website can also select our new "Blocked Seat" option to keep the middle seat on your row open.

What You Can Do

  • Don’t fly if you are feeling ill. Having a compromised immune system already increases your risk of contracting the virus and puts other people at risk.
  • Masks are a requirement and will need to be worn at the airport and while travelling.
  • Regularly washing your hands s one of your best defences against COVID-19. The WHO recommends using an alcohol-based hand sanitiser product, and it's a great idea to keep a travel-sized bottle on you at all times.
  • Check-in online and download your mobile boarding pass to limit the number of exchanges you make with others.
  • Maintain physical spacing at the airports and onboard.
  • Arrive at the airport early to allow for new check-in, security and boarding processes.

Using your face mask

The World Health Organisation has advised the following on the use of face masks. More information is available at WHO.int.

Masks are effective only when used in combination with frequent hand-cleaning with alcohol-based hand rub, or soap and water.

About the Coronavirus

COVID-19 is the scientific name of the disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The 2019 novel coronavirus was identified in China at the end of 2019 and is a new strain of this virus that has not previously been seen in animals.

The World Health Organisation has pointed out that the containment of this virus is feasible and must remain a top priority, so we all must stay informed and do our part to prevent the spread of infections.

Transmission of Corona

Transmission of Coronavirus occurs via direct physical contact with infected respiratory droplets. Specifically, it’s key to avoid the transfer of these infected droplets into the eyes, nose, and mouth.

2-14 days is the estimated incubation period of the disease.

Prevention of Infection

Every person is responsible for their own health, and it’s important to know how to protect yourself against infection.

  1. Try to avoid direct physical contact with sick people.
  2. Wash your hands regularly, for at least 20 seconds, using soap and water or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  3. Try to avoid touching your face unless you’ve just washed your hands properly.

Symptoms

Symptoms of Coronavirus are very similar to the common cold and flu. Consult with a healthcare practitioner if you are concerned that you might be infected.

National Lockdown

In accordance with the directive from the president, our final flight operated on 25 March, and flights will only resume once the travel restrictions have been lifted.

All customers are welcome to make penalty-free changes to flights departing before or after the lockdown. While there will be no penalties, please expect that fare differences may apply if the flight you are looking to buy costs more than the one you initially purchased. Changes can be made under the My Booking section of the website.

Cancellations to a voucher can also be made in the My Booking section of the website. You can use vouchers at a later date to book new flights. These vouchers will need to be redeemed within 12 months – that’s to say that you need to spend them within 12 months, but you can purchase any available flights.

During the lockdown, our call centre will be closed. But we have developed a self-help line with several options available which we hope will give customers the answers they are seeking. Alternatively, we’ve loaded information onto the help section of our website and have created several instructional videos on our YouTube channel.

All FlySafair staff will be on leave, during the lockdown.

COVID-19 Fee

We've taken a number of actions to ensure safe flying during this COVID-19 pandemic. It's been our mission to leave no stone unturned, but unfortunately, these interventions have come at a cost. As a result, we are adding R20 incl VAT to each flight to fund these additional safety measures - a small price to pay for peace of mind. Here's what your R20 will cover.

  1. Temperature screening of you, and crew, and all other passengers on board your flight.
  2. Hand sanitiser is provided at boarding to keep hands clean and can be requested in flight too.
  3. A sanitised mask for each passenger, which must be worn during flight. This is yours to keep.
  4. Between flights, common touch areas are cleaned with Sani-Cide EX3 and then the cabins are treated using aerosol foggers containing a product called Iama Global Sanitiser which is safe for people, but not for viruses.
  5. And each evening surfaces, especially common touch areas, are cleaned with a product called Sani-Cide EX3, which is highly effective against bacteria and viruses. We then use an additional treatment called Chemserve Aerosan, which is applied with Electrostatic sprayers to ensure that every possible surface is coated. This agent has an extended "dwell time" or life, keeping surfaced sanitised for extended periods.
