The largest city in South Africa, Johannesburg forms the major economic hub of the country. Established around the gold mining rush of the 1880s, Johannesburg fast grew into the country’s biggest city. Interesting Johannesburg is the world’s largest city not built around a natural water source such as a river or coastline. Another fascinating fact about Johannesburg is that it is also the world’s biggest man-made forest. With over 10 million trees planted fairly densely, the city actually classifies as a forest. These trees work to combat the greenhouse effect and help to reduce the noise in this urban jungle, while providing home to a very healthy birdlife population.
